3 Simple Self Care Habits to Make You Feel Less Overwhelmed

If you’re having a bad day, or if you’re feeling overwhelmed right now, here are 3 simple self care habits that might just help you to get back on track.

Tune In To Your Mind and Body

One of the best ways to practice some self-care is to tune in to your mind and body. You can do this by developing a simple mindfulness practice. Check out my blog post on how to develop a mindfulness practice HERE.

Mindfulness helps you to non-judgmentally observe what is going on in the present moment – rather than what has happened in the past or what may happen in the future – while calmly acknowledging and accepting your feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations. It’s about being more aware and showing yourself some compassion – something many of us suck at!

Here’s a simple mindfulness meditation to try:

Sit Tall, Stand Tall, Breathe Deeply and Smile

Who would have thought that posture would have such of an impact on our health and wellbeing? But it really does!

I’m a habitual sloucher because I’m hunched over my computer, I really have to remind myself to shift my posture. However, every time I focus on improving my posture, stretching out and breathing more deeply, I notice improvements in how I feel, sit, walk and talk.

A simple self-care habit is to give yourself a lift by sitting or standing up straight. By doing so, you will open up your lungs and heart, allowing fresh oxygen into your system. It will also elongate your back and neck – a part of the body that can easily become stiff and sore, in turn draining your energy levels and dragging down your mood.

Turn Off Your Phone (Seriously!)

One of the self-care habits I swear by is turning off my phone! 

It’s such a simple thing to do, however it’s not easy! Once you train yourself to do so, you’ll quickly realise how liberating going without your phone and the constant notifications is.

Start small by turning it off for half and hour or by leaving your phone at home when you head out for a walk or to the shops. You can slowly increase your time away from your phone from there. Be prepared for some initial anxiety – but you can and you will get through it!

Once you find yourself on the other side, you’ll realise how wonderful life can be without the constant distraction from your phone!

Additionally, I highly recommend getting organized, factoring in quiet time and focussing on one thing at a time. There can all help you to feel less overwhelmed and more centred.
