Color Away Your Stress

Filling in a coloring book is a simple way to enhance focus while reducing anxiety. Get a pack of markers or pencils and give it a try for yourself!

Remember how relaxing it felt to sit down and color when you were a kid? I’ve been sitting down to a coloring session with my 9 year old every day for about a month now and I am amazed at how great it feels to connect and relax. Coloring books have been a childhood mainstay for generations. But lately more and more adults have been getting in on the action as well. I know I have!

You may have seen some of the dozens of adult coloring book titles filling the shelves at bookstores and places like Target. There are some with blank pages and intricate designs that allow you to express your creativity while improving your fine-motor skills. Coloring it seems is one of the most popular new ways to reduce stress and enhance mindfulness. There’s definitely a bit of nostalgia when I sit down to color. I remember how much I enjoyed coloring as a kid before I started doubting my “creativity” or my ability. Before I started comparing my art work to other kids and then judging myself as “not very good”.

Coloring is a very calming experience. It is similar to other mindful practices in that you’re getting into an almost meditative state that slows your breathing and heightens your focus. You can color solo, make it a family-friendly activity, or even do a collaborative project with someone close by or far away. Some people even turn their designs into collages or sewing projects (I haven’t ventured into that yet).

While coloring isn’t a replacement for art therapy, which often involves deeper therapeutic processes directed by a trained expert, it can be an important part of self care.

All you need is a set of colored pencils or fine-tipped markers.

3 Tips to start your coloring experience

  1. Test your markers
Test your markers and glue sticks (if you are making a collage) before starting to color. You want to make sure they won’t bleed through the paper and that they have plenty of ink. You can also slip a piece of scrap paper behind the sheet to protect the other pages.

  2. Find a space
That is big enough for all your supplies and one you can spread out it. Make it comfortable with few distractions.

  3. Put away devices
This is about focusing on one thing at a time. So turn off your phone and eliminate as many distractions as possible.
